Too Fur?
You may or may not know that I'm in the business of wearing rabbit fur. HARK I hear somewhere from the mouth of a judgemental bunny lover... I realise this is a controversial topic but hey it's life, and yes I own a rabbit fur jacket, a rabbit fur hat and a rabbit fur bag. And whenever I'm in the business of wearing them I get the strangest of reactions: 1. Some oddly believe I'm wearing a live rabbit and fret to touch me. They call me cruella de ville or the girl that killed thumper or murderer or yuck. They tend not to be vegetariens or activiists, sometimes don't even own a pet and may even secretly hate animals but they fret and wince. They jump when you tell them to cop a feel like sheepish recluses or an audience watching horror. and half heartedly protest because it's the politically correct thing to do. And now high end designers and there turn to faux fur put more trendish pressure for people to fret and wince. Alas, i'm not too bothered by these social norm reactions (esp social expectations). 2. Men on the other hand, its interesting, usually find themselves petting me, even without realizing it. Alpha male types, ones clearly not bothered by the cruel hierarchy of animal life and confident to breach personal spaces. What tactile creatures they are, addicted to the feel of softness (a tip for any women in want of a husband). I'm uncomfortable every time and the alpha female in me takes offense. Isn't it just outright patronizing to stroke and pet a lady whether or not she feels soft? Either way, I'm so close to wearing a hula hoop as a visible physical boundary line and hiring a bouncer to manage who can enter it.
3. Woman on the other hand, tend to love it. The ones with good taste that is. Non vegan also. It caused quite the stir with a gang of nurses at my last docs appointment. They said I looked exquisite. I smiled. They touched. They admired. I modelled. They enquired. You know, typical lady candy procedure.
4. From strangers, I tend to get double takes, green eyes, cut eyes, kiss teeth, side eyes, wide eyes, smile eyes, straight eyes...eyes eyes eyes all ranging from a bad to good continuum. Sometimes, but not very often, they speak (or shout) and give compliments. I like these occasions. 5. The best reaction so far came from a psychology major trying to figure me out. With perplexed eyes, baffled he looked at me and said I'm trying to figure you out, you seem really nice but usually people that can easily wear dead animal (especially as cute as bunnies) tend to be bad people. Killers. I don't get it. Ha ha ha ha ha I thought. Is he calling me a wolf in sheeps clothing? Or questioning the accuracy of textbook pyschology?? Hm. Whichever inclination, that reminds me not to judge books by covers and I have realised that others may be doing this with me. So anyway, I conclude, You kill a cow, eat the cow, wear the cow. Rabbit is no different. It is food. Why waste it? *see river cottage. Its all hypocritical when someone sporting leather, animal derived clothing or eats meat can point a crooked fingers at me.
Remember food chains? and nature? That would apply also. In many parts of the world they kill an animal and put good use to all it parts...I think our primal instincts and tolerance have been majorly subdued by supermarkets and spoon fed western society. We forget about the hunting, killing and gutting because butchers do all the work and in the end the meat is prettily presented to us. We don't see guts and skin and eyes and heads. Just steak with instructions for preparation. Either way I never realized how much of a stir it would actually cause. I think only vegans have the right to be judgmental (to the point of blind anger) because them, unlike many others, have 'trace' hypocrisy in their food. Truth be known it is the warmest items I own. I wouldn't give them up for the world. Not with all this snow and bad weather. But, my buck stops at rabbit. Even if I could afford it, the idea of wearing an animal that cannot be turned into a pie is far more beastly by my own sartorial standards. And yes there is such a thing as rabbit pie, BBC have one - click here
